Serving both commercial and residential clients, Quality Welding was pleased to fabricate and install an architectural wrought-iron railing for a private residence. Shop drawings were submitted for architectural approval after we verified all the field measurements, and we developed a sound manufacturing plan. To fabricate a wide range of components, we used a combination of cutting, bending, forming, and welding services.
The final, 630-foot exterior railing measured 31 ¼ inches tall and consisted of a 2 ¼-inch cover molding, which was stitch-welded together with a 1 ½-inch by ¾-inch cover molding steel bar. The middle and bottom rail steel bars measured 1 ¼ inches by ¾ of an inch: between the top and middle rails we installed a custom scroll, consisting of 10-inch, schedule 40 pipes which were cut and formed according to the design. Between the middle and bottom rails, we installed ¾-of an inch square bar pickets, with every other picket twisted. The railing post consisted of 2 ½-inch by 2 ½-inch by ¼- of an inch square steel tubing, with a custom made cap and sphere. The end base plates measured 3 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches by ½ of an inch, with a long, #7 rebar welded to the bottom of the plates for installation purposes. The middle post featured a larger base plate, measuring 12 ½ inches by 3 ½ inches by ½ of an inch, with 2, #8 rebars welded to the bottom. This increase in base plate size accommodated the 1 ¼-inch by 3/4-of an inch hand-forged scroll, which was welded to the back side of the post and base plate.
After fabrication, the wrought-iron rails were blasted, then powder coated with a zinc-based primer and 2 coats of black, exterior semi-gloss. After 100 percent quality inspection we then installed the railings at the residential site. To learn more about our custom fabrication and other projects, please contact Quality Welding.
